Community Projects ~ Variety Theatre
The overall plan is to restore and use the theatre as a multi-use facility showing movies, plays, children’s theatre, dinner theatre, stand-up comedy and private parties. Flexible seating will be added to the atrium to allow traditional rows for movies and plays, as well as table/chair set up for wedding receptions & dinner theatre.
The first phase of the renovation is to restore the marquee canopy and vertical blade. This will take place in 2008 and will kick off the overall theatre restoration campaign. Estimates put complete renovation costs at $8 million. Because the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, special care will be taken to ensure the historic features are preserved, replaced and replicated through out the building. The Variety Theatre is also the centerpiece of the Lorain Avenue Master Plan.
